BREAKING AND ENTERING

On August 29 at 2 p.m., Officer Christian Vargas was dispatched to the Bald Hill Road Target for a breaking and entering report.

At the scene he met with the store’s loss prevention supervisor, who stated the back delivery door and employee entrance of the building appeared to have been attempted to be broken into the previous evening. There was a plate missing from the side door as well. The supervisor advised that they were currently reviewing security video. Maintenance crews at the store attempted to fix the damaged doors so that they would open and close.

A report was taken and forwarded to department detectives.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE AND MORE

Officer Aaron Kay was on patrol with Officer Hovsep Sarkasian traveling east on Centerville Road in the area of Route 95 on September 1 around 12:43 a.m. There they observed a vehicle in the left lane traveling at a high rate of speed. The officers then caught up with the car, and according to the report clocked it traveling 54 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone.

The officers also observed that the car was swerving, crossing over lane lines and straddling lanes. Eventually the car approached the rotary near Tollgate Road and entered the rotary without yielding to other vehicles.  A traffic stop was then initiated near Burger King.

Contact was made with the driver, later identified as Rodney Avalo, 25, of 91 Morton Avenue in Woonsocket. Avalo said he was trying to follow his GPS and pointed down to his phone on his lap which had the GPS function on as well as a highlighted route. He said he was coming from a friend’s house and that he and his passenger were now headed to Oakland Beach. He told the officers he didn’t realize he was speeding and that he was unfamiliar with the area.

Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from Avalo and detected signs of intoxication according to their narrative. He then agreed to consent to a series of standardized sobriety tests. Based upon the vehicle in motion, the officers’ contact with Avalo, and his performance during the tests, it was determined that Avalo was unfit to safely operate a motor vehicle and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

His passenger contacted another party for a ride. Avalo’s car was searched which produced what appeared to be marijuana as well as a baggie of powdery white substance. Both items were seized. Avalo was transported to police headquarters, where he later refused to take a chemical breathalyzer test.

A background check on Avalo found he was on probation as well as out on bail. It was determined that he would be held overnight and taken to court in the morning. Avalo was charged with driving under the influence, first offense, refusal to submit to a chemical breathalyzer test, laned roadway violations, failure to yield, speeding, and possession of marijuana. Police were still waiting for test results of the powdery white substance, however according to the report Avalo admitted the substance was for his personal use and was cocaine.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

While on Routine patrol on Elmwood Avenue on September 2 around 8:10 p.m., Officer Jacob Elderkin observed a black Jeep in front of him. According to his account of events, upon seeing the marked patrol unit the Jeep’s driver immediately shut off the car’s lights and made a left turn onto a side street off of Elmwood Avenue.

Officer Elderkin followed the Jeep, which made numerous turns down various side streets before turning onto Second Avenue. A traffic stop was then initiated and contact made with the driver, identified as George Klanian, 51, of 16 Bucklin Avenue in Warwick. While speaking with Klanian, the officer determined that he had driven in a strange manner due to the fact that his vehicle was unregistered and, following background checks being run, also had a suspended license. The vehicle was then towed from the scene and the license plates removed from the vehicle.

Klanian received a violation for operating an unregistered motor vehicle, driving on a suspended license. He then proceeded to walk home.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Walter Larson was on patrol on August 27 at approximately 5:30 p.m. when he was dispatched to the Warwick Mall J.C. Penney in reference to an adult female in custody for shoplifting.

At the store he met with loss prevention officers, who stated that a suspect identified as Robin Morgan 63, 289 Woodville Road in Hopkington. According to security’s statement, Morgan selected numerous items, which she then concealed in bags. Those bags were then placed in a J.C. Penney shopping bag. Morgan then proceeded to exit the store after passing all points of sale and making no attempt to pay for the concealed merchandise.

Morgan was then approached outside by security and asked to re-enter the store, which she did. Once inside, $632 worth of items were recovered. Background checks on Morgan revealed that she had no formal charges on her criminal background and was not wanted. She was issued a court summons for shoplifting and signed all paperwork. According to the police account, Morgan admitted that she has shoplifted and was not going to fight the crime and wanted to move on. She was then released from custody.

STOLEN GENERATOR AND BLOWER

On September 1 at approximately 2:26 p.m., Officer Nicholas DiNardo responded to the Quaker Lane Lowe’s for a report of a prior shoplifting.

Upon arrival he met with the reporting party who provided a statement stating that on August 29 at approximately 8:35 p.m. an unknown woman entered the store. The suspect selected a Husqvarna backpack blower valued at $439 and a Generac portable generator valued at $799. She then placed the items on a flat blue shopping cart and proceeded out the front entrance without paying.

A store manager confronted the woman outside and asked her to return to the store, but the woman refused. She then placed the items into a vehicle and got into the passenger’s seat and left the scene. No license data was obtained.

The report notes that this is the second shoplifting occurrence by this female at this particular Lowe’s, and Lowe’s does have video surveillance of the suspect on file.
