Country’s oldest national youth soccer tournament returning to Rhode Island

US Youth Soccer is proud to announce that Kingston, R.I., and Soccer Rhode Island will host the 2014 US Youth Soccer Region I (East) Championships as part of the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, the country’s oldest and most prestigious national youth soccer tournament. The games will take place at the University of Rhode Island for a second straight year. URI hosted the event this past June.

The championships are expected to draw more than 4,500 players and an estimated 10,000 spectators.

The US Youth Soccer Region I Championships consist of US Youth Soccer State Champions from 15 Eastern state associations, including the host Soccer Rhode Island, US Youth Soccer Region I Premier League champions, as well as drawn wildcard entries. Following individual state championship tournaments, the Regional Championships are the second step of the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series.

The tournament will attract more than 260 boys and girls teams, ages Under-12 through Under-19, from the 15 Eastern US Youth Soccer State Associations that make up US Youth Soccer Region I (Connecticut, Delaware, Eastern New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York West, Pennsylvania West, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia).

“It is always exciting to begin planning future US Youth Soccer Regional Championships, and part of that initial planning is choosing the best possible host city for each of our four Regional Championships,” said John Sutter, President of US Youth Soccer. “Rhode Island was a great host in 2005, as well as last year, and we look forward to working with them again in 2014 for an even better tournament.”

Regional winners of the Under-13 through Under-19 brackets earn a berth to the 2014 US Youth Soccer National Championships.

The 2014 Kingston event will begin on June 26, with round robin play June 27-29, semifinals on June 30 and finals on July 1.

The US Youth Soccer National Championship Series gives US Youth Soccer teams the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play.

Annually, the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series provides the nation’s top collegiate coaches with the premier stage to identify and scout the most coveted players in the country. In 2013, more than 700 coaches attended the US Youth Soccer Regional Championships including many of the top programs in the country.
