HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

According to a Cranston Police Department (CPD) press release, Colonel Michael Winquist, Chief of the CPD, recently announced that the department initiated a homicide investigation on April 5 that led to the arrest of a local man for first degree murder and the recovery of the victim identified as a Fall River woman reported missing on April 1, 2017.

On the afternoon of April 5, the CPD said they received an anonymous call that an individual by the name of James Lombardi had murdered a missing woman from Fall River and had buried her behind a vacant residence being renovated on Preston Avenue in Cranston. Detectives contacted the Fall River Police Department and learned they had taken a missing report on the evening of April 1 for Krystal Boswell, age 29. According to the reporting party, Boswell had left Fall River during the early morning hours of April 1, with a male named “Jimmy” who used a Rhode Island cellular telephone number.

Detectives were aware that a residence located at 9 Preston Ave. was recently sold and being renovated. They responded to the address and observed an area behind the residence where the ground appeared to have been disturbed. It was learned that a male subject named James Lombardi had recently performed work at the residence and was a recent acquaintance of Ms. Boswell. Detectives also received information that. Lombardi was seen in the rear of the same residence on the morning of April 2, digging a hole. A court-authorized search warrant was obtained to search the premises of the residence, as well as for Lombardi’s residence located at 45 Wakefield Ave. in Cranston.

Members of the CPD Criminal Identification Unit, assisted by the Rhode Island State Police Forensic Services Unit, initiated the search of the yard at 9 Preston Ave. on April 5 to include excavation of the area of interest. During the early morning hours of April 7, the body of Krystal Boswell was recovered several feet below ground.

The search warrant at 45 Wakefield St. was executed by the Cranston Police Special Reaction Team on the morning of April 6. This search of this location is ongoing with several items of possible evidentiary value being seized.

An autopsy was performed by the Rhode Island State Medical Examiner’s Office, at which time Ms. Boswell’s death was ruled a homicide. The preliminary manner of death was determined to be blunt force trauma and asphyxiation.

An arrest warrant was subsequently obtained for

James Lombardi, age 32, of 45 Wakefield Ave. in Cranston, charging him with first-degree murder. Lombardi was apprehended without incident at an apartment complex located at 81 Spring St., Lincoln, Rhode Island by Cranston Police Detectives and members of the Rhode Island State Police. He was arraigned at the Third District Court in Warwick on Monday and ordered to be held without bail. He has a bail hearing on April 24.
