Creativity and imagination on display as JHS Homecoming Week hits stride

If the creativity of Onesie Day provides any measuring stick, Saturday’s Johnston High School Homecoming may just surpass any and all previous celebrations.

Students representing all four classes – as well as countless faculty and staff personnel – were dressed in a variety of colorful garb Tuesday. It came one day after they “cranked it up a notch” Monday for Tacky Tourist Day, according to Greg Russo, who chairs the science department and serves as the Student Council adviser.

“The students have really shown unlimited school spirit since Friday’s Spirit Day when we held a Pink Out Day for breast cancer,” Russo, who was dressed in a skeleton costume, offered Tuesday. “I’m really looking forward to Blue and White Day Pep Rally and Saturday’s parade.”

Creative costumes were all over the halls for Onesie Day. Joey LaVallee came as a fireplace, which was decorated for Christmas. Angelina Emerson dressed as a giraffe, while Emicely Rodriguez wore a unicorn outfit.

Meanwhile, Olivia Costa said she was dressed as Olaf from the movie “Frozen,” while Delaney LaRose showed up in a tiger outfit.

Even the candidates for Homecoming King and Queen showed up in classic and colorful costumes. The winners were decided yesterday by a secret ballot but won’t be announced until Saturday.

“There’s lots and lots of creativity and imagination throughout the entire school,” Russo said. “The students were really into this Spirit Week.”

Thus, Russo announced the 2019 Homecoming Queen and King candidates, all of whom were wearing colorful costumes.

The Queen hopefuls are Delaney LaRose, Mia Ragosta, Meghan Philbrick, Natalie Soares and Lauren Campagnone. The King candidates are Isaac Samayoa, Nicholas Butler, Joseph Patterson, Nicholas Guenette and Carlos Fragoso.

Johnston High’s “Rite of Fall” continues today with Holiday Day. It’ll be Fourth of July Day for seniors, St. Patrick’s Day for juniors, Halloween for sophomores and Valentine’s Day for freshmen.

Panther Pride will be running rampant tomorrow when Blue and White Day features the Blue and White Pep Rally at 12:15 p.m., which will also serve as a kick-off for what Russo called “Overnighters.” Each class works around the clock to complete their respective themed floats in time for Saturday’s 8:30 a.m. judging at the school.

The Homecoming Parade, which is always viewed by hundreds of residents, will step off from the school’s parking lot on Atwood Avenue at 10 a.m. and will be led by several delegations and dignitaries, including the Johnston Police Department and Mayor Joseph Polisena.

“As always, I’m really looking forward to the Homecoming parade,” Polisena, a 1972 Johnston High grad, told the Sun Rise. “This is a fun celebration for people of all ages, especially alums like me. It’s when everyone shows their Panther Pride.”
