Cruise with the Lions Saturday at the Crowne

“The weather is looking like we’ll be able to sneak it in,” Jennifer Hill said with optimism ringing in her voice. “And, we certainly hope so!”

Hill, who serves as secretary of the Greater Warwick Lions Club, was speaking about the non-profit’s annual car show – Cruising at the Crowne – to be held Saturday, Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

“Of course, all these type of events are dependent upon weather,” added Jason Hill, Jennifer’s husband, who is the Lions Club president. “This is our annual show and we’re hoping for good weather.

The Hills, who like other Warwick Lions have pumped lots of work into the show, expect that 150 classic cars will be on display Saturday.

“If the weather is nice,” Jason Hill said, “we could have as many as 200 cars.”

All of which would be a tremendous boost for the Lions and help the Warwick club continue its charitable giving in the community.

Although the Warwick Lions hosts the weekly car cruises at Oakland Beach, the area wouldn’t be large enough to accommodate all the vintage vehicles the Hills and club members are hoping to host Saturday during what is the group’s annual show.

Registration is $15 per vehicle and Jason Hill announced that an awards ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.

One of the events highlights, as is the case during the weekly cruises in Oakland Beach, will be music played by DJ The Car Guy Richard George, a retired public school educator who travels all over Rhode Island with his portable music machine spinning a variety of oldies and woo wop music dating back to the 1950s.

No car cruise, the Hills and other car aficionados will attest, would be complete with music that people enjoy while walking around viewing all kinds of classic cars.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Hill announced that Saturday’s show will have 10 vendors and four non-profits will set up displays to advertise their missions. Likewise, Buckle Up All of Us, an artiest, will be on hand and focus on car safety.

She also announced that commemorative T-shirts will be on sale and the Crowne Plaza Hotel will set up an area where show-goers can purchase food and drink. Anyone who’d like further information should call Jennifer at 871-8327.
