Cyberbullying and the law topic of Thursday meeting at Wyman School
Pannone Lopes Devereaux & West LLC (PLDW) Partner Brian J. Lamoureux, a national legal voice on the use of social media in businesses and schools, will lead an interactive educational discussion on cyberbullying and the law for parents and educators on Thursday at 7 p.m. The free event is hosted by the E.T. Wyman Elementary School’s Parent Teachers Association and is open to the public. It will be held in the school’s multipurpose room, 1 Columbia Avenue, Warwick.
“Social media opens up a whole new social dynamic for schools, children and parents,” Lamoureux said in a statement. “Bullying that was once confined to the school yard is now playing out on a much larger stage. The consequences can be tragic. We’ll look at challenges schools and parents face and the steps parents and educators can take to mitigate cyberbullying.”
According to Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project November 2011 study, 95 percent of all teens ages 12-17 are online with 80 percent of the teens using social media sites. The research results also found 58 percent of teen Internet and cell phone users say their parents have been the biggest influence on what they think is appropriate or inappropriate when using the Internet or a cell phone.
“Schools can be very effective brokers in working with parents to stop and remedy cyberbullying situations,” said Wyman School Principal Ron Celio in a statement. “We are having this assembly to educate parents on social media use by children, to make them aware of the threat of cyberbullying and prevent this type of behavior from harming our students.”
