Ray DeAngelis capped off his decades of service to the Rhode Island high school volleyball community recently, refereeing his final match at the R.I. Interscholastic League Girls Volleyball Championships at Rhode Island College. DeAngelis served as the first official for the RIIL Division II Final  that day and was also onhand to present awards in the Division I & III Championship matches.

“Ray has been a great friend and a wonderful administrator and official,” said RIIL Executive Director Thomas Mezzanotte. “He loves and respects the game, and he loves working with the kids. He represents what high school sports are all about.”

A volleyball official for 30 years, DeAngelis has served as the RIIL’s sport director of girls volleyball and co-director of boys volleyball for nearly a decade, also serving as the assignor of officials for both boys and girls volleyball since 2014. The President of the R.I. Volleyball Officials Association for the last 15 years, DeAngelis was a member of the NFHS volleyball rules committee in 2005 and 2006.

DeAngelis has  done his share of coaching,  as well. He served as assistant coach  to the women’s volleyball team at CCRI for one season, then head coach from 2001 to 2008, compiling a record of 223-99, while leading the Lady Knights to appearances in the New England Junior College Division II and National Championships and earning NJCAA Region XXI Coach of the Year honors. DeAngelis also coached club volleyball for R.I. Blast for four years.

Retiring from his position as Purchasing Officer at CCRI in 2013, DeAngelis has been married for 47 years to his “best friend and high school sweetheart” Geri. The Cranston residents have two children, David and Rana and a 2 ½-year-old grandson Lucas. Later this month, Ray and Geri will be heading to Texas, where Rana and her husband Hercalano live, to await the arrival of their next grandchild.
