Duck race a highlight at Thundermist fun day this Saturday

Posted

Thundermist Health Center of Woonsocket, West Warwick, and South County will celebrate their 50th anniversary of providing Rhode Island residents with quality health care by holding a Duck Race and Family Fun day. This free event on Saturday, September 28 at the Royal Mills at 125 Providence St. in West Warwick starts at 11 a.m. and the ducks will start racing – that’s floating down the Pawtuxet River - at noon.

Beginning in 1969 due to the need of a family planning center, Thundermist started in Woonsocket. In 2000 they were the second health center accredited by the Joint Commission. From 2001 through 2003, they merged with the Health Center of South County and established a health center in West Warwick. By converting an old mill building in 2011, the group opened the state’s first health center that was fully designed as a patient centered medical home.

Rubber duckies will be provided at the event and are $1 per duck, $5 for seven, $10 for 15, $20 for 40, or $50 for 200 ducks. All of the money donated and raised at the celebration will be used for future “services of Thundermist” explains the Associate Vice President of Development and Communications, Amanda Barney. “Services like insurance reimbursement, wellness yoga, and music therapy help Rhode Islanders feel their best.”

Sponsored by John J. Clark Insurance and the Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, the event will also include giant Jenga and Connect Four, crafts like sand art and face painting, and a dunk tank. “We’re really excited about the dunk tank where people can throw balls at medical professionals and drop them into water,” Barney said.

Parking for this celebration can be found at 186 Providence St in West Warwick and those participating are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation. Barney states, “It seems to be something the community really enjoys and looks forward to.”

First prize of the duck race is a $500 cash prize, whereas second place receives $250 and third place will get $100. Help Thundermist celebrate 50 years of quality health care by attending this event that promises to be fun for all ages. If Saturday’s event is rained out, then the event will be postponed for Sunday, Sept. 29th at the same time. Don’t forget to bring a non-perishable food item for Thundermist to distribute amongst their three food pantries in Woonsocket, West Warwick, and South County.
