Edesia Global Nutrition Solutions director to address Rocky Hill Class of 2012
Navyn Salem, executive director of Edesia Global Nutrition Solutions, will address the Class of 2012 at Rocky Hill School’s commencement exercises, the morning of Friday, June 8.
“After hearing about Navyn’s mission to find solutions for childhood malnutrition around the globe and the journey taken to implement the program, I knew her message would be especially meaningful to this graduating class,” Rocky Hill’s Head of School Jonathan M. Schoenwald, Ph.D. said in a statement.
After laying the groundwork for a factory, which is now fully self-sufficient, in her father’s native country of Tanzania in 2007, Salem founded Edesia and opened a state-of-the-art production facility in Providence in March 2010. These factories, as partners and licensees of the French company, Nutriset, produce nutritious, peanut-based ready-to-use foods to treat and prevent childhood malnutrition. Since opening, Edesia has reached 800,000 young children in 24 developing countries.
Originally from Bloomfield, Conn., Salem is a graduate of Boston College. Prior to founding Edesia, she worked for six years in corporate marketing, culminating as a vice president for TMP Worldwide/Monster.com in Holliston, Mass.
Salem lives in Barrington with her husband and four daughters. She is the recipient of the 2012 Bryant University New England Businesswoman of the Year, the 2010 Providence Business News Women to Watch Award and Innovator of the Year Award and the 2010 St. Edmund’s Medal of Honor.
