EG Animal Protection League lays out plan for new Cranston home

The East Greenwich Animal Protection League abruptly, but miraculously, found foster or adoptive homes for all of their animals last month when it was suddenly given a deadline to remove all of them from its current location on Hallene Road in Warwick. The League had changed locations four times prior to the sudden scramble, but now is finally working on a place to call home for good.

The league will, at some point, move into the former Cranston Casting Company building at 44 Worthington Road in Cranston. Dr. Andrew Martin, who ran an emergency veterinary service in the unit the League currently occupies, purchased the building and sold it to the League. Though they don’t know specifically when they’ll be able to move into the 5,000-square foot facility since there is still much work left to be done, President Tammy Flanagan and Board Member Karen Kalunian have big plans for its transformation.

During a tour of the building Friday, the two discussed where they hope to put animal viewing rooms, indoor play rooms, fenced in outdoor runs, veterinary care areas, dog, cat, and puppy rooms, and more. One room will be designated as a laundry room, which Kalunian and Flanagan note will be convenient as many volunteers bring League laundry home with them. Flanagan also wants to create a small area with a couch and television where dogs that get along can spend time together in a mock “home” setting.

Kalunian was particularly excited about a well-lit area that will become a cat room, exclaiming “the cats are going to have windows!”

Flanagan noted non-animal related changes to the building as well, including fire code upgrades, new ‘Exit’ signs, and handicap accessible restrooms. They plan for some small changes to what will be their office and reception areas, like new tiles and curtains. To really make the place their own, the League will put their own name on the front of building and may decorate the entry way with dog bone-shaped pillars.

In addition, the League will decorate the inside and out of the building with bricks purchased through one of its fundraising efforts. Supporters of the league can purchase bricks, with or without artwork, which can be inscribed with messages of support or in honor of a beloved pet. The bricks cost between $25 and $175 and can be purchased at https://polarengraving.com/EastGreenwichAnimalProtectionLeague.

The League has also raised nearly $5,000 through GoFundMe. They have set a $25,000 goal there, and donations can be made at https://www.gofundme.com/build-our-animal-shelter. Flanagan said they need another $100,000 in addition to the $50,000 they already have in order to complete the building.

Some of the work on the building is done by volunteers on “Volunteer Days” the League hosts. Those interested in volunteering can reach out through phone at 738-1716 or email egaplevents@gmail.com
