Fallon commits to D1 UMaine

Caitlyn Fallon has carved out quite the resume during her career in the circle at the Pilgrim High softball field.

Fallon has been one of the top pitchers and all-around players in the state during her high school career, starting with her freshman season at Vets. She was named captain of the team her junior year, and helped guide the Patriots to a deep playoff run last season.

Her hard work and production have not only impressed those watching in Rhode Island, but also those watching all throughout New England. Fallon recently signed her National Letter of Intent to play Division I softball for the Black Bears of the University of Maine in Orono.

“It’s been a long time coming and I’m very excited to make it official and commit to playing softball at the University of Maine. (I liked) everything, the people there, the resources that they have, the education that I’ll get. The team is very welcoming,” said Fallon of her decision.

“I’m so proud of her and what she’s accomplished. Whenever (a player goes D1), it is special. She’s a special player and a special person, she’s talented beyond belief. She has a great work ethic, always pushes herself. The way she leads the team, she supports everyone on the field and when she’s not on the field she’s their biggest cheerleader,” added Pilgrim softball coach Paul Kennedy. “It transcends just her ability, it’s everything about her, she’s truly one of the best players I have ever had the pleasure of coaching.”

Even as a freshman, Kennedy knew that he had something special in Fallon, who quickly emerged as one of the top prospects and players to come out of Warwick.

“You could tell that she had the potential very quickly and the determination to go with it. She really pushed herself, starting her freshman year at Vets, she has improved every year. You always knew that the potential was there and it is nice to see it realized before she has even played a single game in her senior season,” said Kennedy.

Few athletes have the opportunity to play softball at the collegiate level, and even fewer are recruited to play in D1. Although Fallon expects the jump in competition to be a grind, she embraces the opportunity to push herself and get better as a player.

“It’s a lot of preparation. I know that I’m always going to have to work harder, there’s always going to be someone that is working harder than me. That really motivates me to be the best that I can be and to hopefully be ready to play once I get up there,” said Fallon. “Every play I make, every pitch that I throw, I just want to be the best that I can be and to have that opportunity.”

Although Fallon has one more season left in a Patriots uniform, Kennedy admits that it will be a challenge replacing her production, as well as her presence on the field.

“It’s going to be tough, you feel bad for the person that’s going to have to replace her. She’s going to leave a big hole, not just on the field but in the dugout. She’s the team leader, she was the captain during her junior season which I very rarely do, they’re going to be very big shoes to fill,” said Kennedy.

Fallon also hopes to make the most of her final year in high school, and to enjoy her final season with her friends at Pilgrim.

“I’m going to use my time the same way as I will once I’m up there. I’m going to try to improve on every pitch, but I’m also going to enjoy my time with the Pilgrim softball team,” said Fallon. “All of my friends on the team is what is important to me. I’ll be excited to go to Maine but will also miss being here.”
