Saturday fire dept. open house will be sensory-friendly

As part of Fire Safety Month, the Warwick Fire Department will host an open house on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Station 8 firehouse on Post Road (near Anne & Hope), which is open to the public beginning at 11 a.m. and will run until 2 p.m.

The open house will include fire safety education exercises, tours of the fire station, giveaways and pizza provided by Papa Gino's. There will also be apparatus on site for kids (young and old) to enjoy.

Fire Chief Peter McMichael said on Wednesday that the open house will include a special hour starting at 10 a.m. available only to children and members of the community that are afflicted with sensory processing difficulties, which is being promoted through the Autism Project of Rhode Island.

"It's conjunctive with some training we did with our firefighters for people with autism," McMichael said. "It came up that when we do these types of things, we're leaving out a large segment of the population with these types of issues, so we're trying to address that by doing at least a one-hour session for those with sensory issues."

Per a release, “Since 1993, Papa Gino’s has supported more than 1,800 fire station open houses, giving away 100,000 large pizzas and 1.5 million activity sheets and educational flyers. This year, Papa Gino’s will donate pizzas to nearly 50 fire stations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island to feed the families who attend these important community events.”
