Firefighter shopping made easy

To the Editor:

For the record, it does not bother me much when I see a fire truck at Stop & Shop. I know that they are supposed to shop on their own time and I have discussed this issue with a few dozen firefighters and have drawn the conclusion that there are times when it can’t be helped and a few times when it can and should. I met with now-retired Chief Armstrong and many others during 2015 and 2016 and came away believing that it was no big issue. I still don’t it’s a big issue, but being a man of solutions, rather than rants, I suggest the following:

1. The use of Peapod.

Stop & Shop has a delivery service. The delivery fees are between $7 and $18. The delivery is “next-day” on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday.

2. The use of Peapod/Pickup.

Stop & Shop also offers

Peapod/Pickup service and for only $3 they will bring the designated pre-paid groceries to the vehicle waiting in the Stop & Shop parking lot eliminating the need for our firefighters to leave the truck. The service, however, is still “next-day.”

3. Self-help delivery.

Maybe one of the family members of one of the firefighters could use a few extra dollars and would handle the grocery delivery when food is needed “same-day.” This was suggested by the commercial service rep at Peapod as a solution to their other accounts that sometimes need it next-day and sometimes need it “now.”

4. Independent grocers.

I bet that if the firefighters called, someone would deliver. I can’t speak for them, but if a pizza can be delivered, it makes logical sense that the independent grocer could too.

5. Or…

maybe we should just cut them some slack on this one. I’m not saying that the Warwick Fire Department contract is perfect, far from it. There are issues that certainly need improvement for the taxpayers, the firefighters, and the retirees alike. I just don’t think it’s such a big deal if they stop briefly to pick up some food. Other towns and cities allow it.

Finally…

I spoke to

a lady named Linsay in the Providence Fire Department, a lieutenant in the East Greenwich Fire Department, a clerk in the Deputy Chiefs office of the Cranston Fire Department, and a lady in the West Warwick Fire Department. They all said that the practice has always been allowed in their towns/cities and here is the interesting part. Every one that I spoke to said that no one has ever complained. Ever.

Once again the Non-Taxpayer Mayor, still with the delinquent taxes opens his mouth with no specifics. The fact of the matter is that this issue has been debated all over the country and there are numerous documented cases where people have objected. Maybe the Non-Taxpayer Mayor prefers to ignore the DEM Diesel idling law as well. Let's let that slide too. See, the problem with the Non-taxpayer Mayor is that his mentality is such that not only does he not recognize waste and abuse, but his mindset is such that it is acceptable to him to ignore the impact of these activities relative to costs to the taxpayer.

For example, when he lived a few houses away from me and every one in the neighborhood paid their property taxes, car taxes, and utility taxes to support city services such as the fuel in fire apparatus, he choose instead to not pay any taxes, live like a squatter for 2+ years, and ignore all of his financial responsibilities which are an obligation of each resident so the city can support services. Yet now, the Non-Taxpayer Mayor has the unmitigated gall to offer solutions, (as stupid as they are) to budgetary issues. So finally, as of yesterday, only due to being heckled, did he finally pay his car taxes. But what happened to his car taxes in 2013, 14 and 15? His car was mysteriously off the tax rolls although he lived in this city. Unfortunately, he still has defaulted on his utility tax to the tune of 548.07.

So the concept of the Non-Taxpayer Mayor putting forth any advice on solutions is laughable at best. How about this idea. Bring your food to work like the rest of the workers in this country.

By the way , I forgot to add this. Mr. Corrente states he is a man of solutions, yet in the worst display of manhood he fought for 9 years NOT to pay child support. Man of solutions, lets have a public debate on the issues of the city, see if you can embarrass yourself even further.

It's such an honor and privilege to be exposed to the self-righteous, pious, redundant, repetitive commentary of "The Captain", the only guiltless, sinless, faultless person in Warwick over the age of seven. I never tire of hearing his constant efforts to remind us of issues that are so critical to his life- let us all pray that he never finds a new hobby or diversion.

Perhaps, someday, he'll take it to the next level and commit himself to actually running for office and changing things, instead of crying in the wild and hoping someone else will heed his faultless wisdom...we can only dream! Yay "Captain"!

    RISchadenfreude,

Maybe you are ok with having someone run for office and spout out about cutting taxes when that person doesn't pay his fair share. Maybe disingenuous is a word absent from your vocabulary just because you are anesthetized due to the hypocrisy in the political realm of Rhode Island. And you also make a great point by stating that "of issues that are so critical to his life". The statement speaks volumes. Head in the sand, not active in your community, not paying attention to the deficits in your community and how these deficits will effect future generations. Keep smiling RI. Im sure your happy as long as your garbage gets picked up on Tuesday. After all, what more to life in a community is there?

    Dear RISchadenfreude,

Thanks for your comments. I couldn't agree with you more.

    Rick Corrente

P.S. For the record: I paid $1,776 a month for child support and $580 a month in alimony for many years and never missed ANY payments even though I had to sell my home, sell my boat and borrow $5,000 from my father to do it. Years later, my 2 sons decided they wanted to come and live with their dad. That was over 25 years ago. To this day they are still my 2 best friends.

Also for the record: I joined over a thousand Rhode Islanders that sued their lenders for breaking R.I. Law. We sued them in Federal Court AND WE WON! The court ordered, in my case, that Archway Holdings/Redstick pay all real estate and utility taxes even if the bill comes in my name. They haven't done it in a very timely manner but the bill is legally theirs, not mine.

However I have been delinquent on my car taxes. I am 100% guilty. I am very sorry for this and I went to the tax collectors office on Friday March 24th to make amends and to pay all my back taxes. I really thought I had paid them completely but the computer proved me wrong. I still owed a penny. That's not a misprint folks. I owed one PENNY. All the previous years of taxes were paid ON TIME EXCEPT ONE PENNY! I have the bill and the paid receipt to prove it and, to show good faith, I paid my current car taxes as well. I am sincerely sorry for my tax-delinquent behavior and I hope the Warwick citizens will somehow forgive me. I know that Rob Cote, AKA "The Captain", won't.

    Thanks again, RISchadenfreude.

Happy Easter to you and your family.

    Richard, and your alias RISchadenfreude,

Your so full of BS it isn't even funny. Your car taxes were overdue almost a year and it isnt the first time. You have been consistently overdue on your taxes and if you knew how to use the online system you would plainly see your payments. Your 2010 bill was paid almost 2 years late. Here is the bill below:

Bill Year 2010 Date Due 7/15/10

    Bill 2018248

Activity Posted Paid By/Reference Amount Payment 1/25/2012 $569.93

2011 bill, due 7/15/21011 also paid 1/25/12 below

    Bill Year 2011

    Bill 2118114

Activity Posted Paid By/Reference Amount Payment 1/25/2012 $450.24

The point is as I have said, a person that is consistently tax delinquent has no right running for office and should have no input and criticism about taxes when he doesn't pay them and doesn't take his civic responsibility seriously. Businessman??? Right.

In particular, when someone that leaves a trail of unpaid bills and litigation where ever they go and what ever they venture into, it begs the question whether or not they are responsible enough to hold any kind of public office.

When you examine your record of litigation as a defendant in civil cases, a reasonable person would conclude that your inherent instinctive behavior towards financial obligations is one of an extremely poor record, probably has had a disastrous effect on your credit rating, and would be financially dangerous to have you in a position to make fiscal decisions for a municipality, when the overwhelming evidence suggests that you are a fiscal mess of unpaid bills and litigation.

Further, how a "mortgage broker" who has been in the business for 30 years was able to get scammed into a "predatory loan" speaks volumes as to your knowledge of finances. It was easier for you to walk away and let your house go then to pay your obligations. Bankruptcy is for those that make consistently poor decisions.

The evidence of the numerous civil actions indicates the same poor behavior.

    Captain Krunch,

Believe me, I'm far from oblivious to RI's (more specifically, Warwick's) shortcomings- I'm sure I can say without contradiction that I'm not the only one who thinks you're a broken record and your personal attacks are over the top.

At least our fine WPD will come when people find you skulking in their bushes, collecting video "evidence" - I call that taxes well-spent.

There's a fine line between being a self-appointed "community watchdog" and being obsessed...perhaps a therapist or psychiatric professional could chime in and tell us all if you've crossed it...

For example, you think I'm Mr. Corrente's "alias"(?)...is it so hard to believe that there are readers who are tired of your constant haranguing? Stick to actual issues (maybe some different/new ones?) and maybe folks won't think you're as much in need of medication and counseling.

Or should I call you RI*cha***r**d*

Its shameful that you are unable to address the issues in any intelligent sense or speak to the actual budgetary numbers and expenditures. That in itself signifies your relevance.

    Cap'm,

I never said the actual issues you address don't exist or that you're wrong, just that your ad nauseum regurgitation of them and personal attacks are tiring, so you'll have to excuse my "shameful" lack of argument. Instead of pissing & moaning, do something constructive and run for office...or, to coin a phrase, is it a matter of "Those who can't do, preach"?

That's a classic defense tactic you're using as well- if someone's opinion isn't the same as yours, it's irrelevant...that's about what I expected as a response from you; I see that anyone who discusses the issues "intelligently" gets personally attacked and belittled.

How "significant" do you think you and your opinions are beyond your four walls? The mention of your name causes people to roll their eyes. If you didn't appear to be on a shrill vendetta, people may begin to take you seriously.

Psst...your paranoia is showing and it's a bit disturbing..I'm not Mr. Corrente...

I know it's going to take some time to get your mind around it, but more than one person disagrees with you. Get your mind around that.

    Rick,

As I said before. Any time that you would like to have a debate about the civics issues in Warwick, just let me know. I'm not quite sure on how much embarrassment you are willing to suffer though, but I can assure you that it would be the likes of which you have never experienced. So pick the time and the place, Ill pay for the advertisements and the food, and you will be intellectually pummeled into the stone age.
