Four new WPD officers sworn in, Curley promoted to sergeant

A large gathering of city officials, public safety personnel, family members and friends joined together in the community room of the Warwick Police Department headquarters in Apponaug on Tuesday evening to celebrate the promotion of one officer to the rank of Sergeant and welcome four new officers into the department.

Officer John Curley, a seven-year veteran with the Warwick Police Department, was promoted to sergeant and was sworn in by Avedisian. His sergeant badge was pinned by his wife Mallory. Curley was a top finisher at the 2016 Connecticut SWAT Challenge.

Police chief Colonel Stephen McCartney congratulated four new officers to Warwick, who will now enter a temporary probationary period where they will undergo an expedited training regiment to familiarize themselves with how Warwick police do business. All four officers have previously been on police forces elsewhere.

“Not only will these officers bring a veteran presence to the department, I also know they’re quality people,” McCartney said. “Your loved ones and families should be very proud.”

Mayor Scott Avedisian thanked the many city officials in attendance, which included City Council president Joseph Solomon, Ward 5 Councilman Ed Ladouceur and Fire Department Chief James McLaughlin.

“It takes a little bit of everybody to make this city the wonderful place that it is,” Avedisian said.

The mayor then swore in the four probationary officers – Justin M. Martin; Randy S. Bell; Jonathan P. Byrne; and Karen M. Haarr.

“We are glad that you are joining the best police force in the state of Rhode Island. We expect you to uphold the wonderful image of the Warwick Police Department,” Avedisian said. “Although we don’t say it enough, the men and women of this city truly appreciate the work you do day in and day out to keep us all safe.”
