With the April 17 deadline to file income tax returns just eight weeks away, United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI) is bringing its free tax preparation service to Warwick on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The service will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 1040 on the CCRI Knight Campus, 400 East Avenue.

The event is open to the general public, and those interested in attending are asked to call 2-1-1 in advance to schedule an appointment.

Known as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, initiative, the program helps eligible Rhode Islanders earning $55,000 or less annually file their income tax returns for free, ensuring they receive the money they’re due in tax refunds and credits. All VITA sites are staffed by IRS trained and certified volunteers who offer services in English and Spanish.

Those attending the VITA tax preparation service must bring the following: Social Security Card(s) for self, spouse and all dependents; picture ID for self and spouse (if applicable); proof of health insurance coverage; all 2017 W-2, 1099 and 1095-A forms; copy of 2016 Federal Tax Return if available; child and dependent care expenses and Tax Identification Number (SSN, EIN) of care provider; and a checking or savings account number with routing number for direct deposit.

Individuals not able to attend the February 28 tax preparation event in Warwick may call 2-1-1 to find a VITA program site closest to them.

Last year, nearly 13,000 individuals and families took advantage of the VITA initiative, filing both their federal and state income tax returns through two dozen sites statewide. In total, the effort helped to return more than $23 million to working Rhode Islanders in the form of tax refunds, child tax credits and the Earned Income Tax Credit. VITA sites are funded by United Way of RI in partnership with Citizens Bank.
