Freshman Rep. Shekarchi declines health insurance
Rep. K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) has declined the state-funded health insurance plan that is offered to all legislators.
“I cannot in good conscience accept this free health insurance when so many of our state residents are going without health insurance and so many workers, in both the public and private sectors, are seeing their insurance premium contributions rise,” said Shekarchi.
“Not only did I make this a commitment during my campaign to win the House seat, but I also believe I was elected to work to bring fiscal accountability to all aspects of state government,” he said. “We all must do our part to contribute to the fiscal health of the state. In light of that, I believe the most appropriate action I can take is to decline to accept the free insurance coverage at this time.”
