Frosted smiles and cupcakes

After preparing for the “Cupcake Wars” at Greenwood Care and Rehabilitation at 1139 Main Avenue for more than a month, about 20 residents and 10 staff members took part in a face-off on Valentine’s Day. The event was inspired by the popular Food Network reality television show, “Cupcake Wars,” which showcases people having friendly cupcake decorating contests. Five judges, including facility administrator Mike Lopes, Chef David Kruzona, RN MDS Coordinator Fran Raposa, the assistant to maintenance Chuck Jencks, as well as Warwick Beacon reporter Jessica Botelho, announced the winners Thursday afternoon. Residents and staffers alike were split up into four groups of at least eight members to come up with their own theme. “Leaps for Love” centered on a fairytale theme, and created a castle out of cardboard boxes. They wrapped the boxes in aluminum foil and drew boxes on it with black markers to make it look like stone. They won an award for best appearance and presentation.

“Team Frosty” created an elaborate “hippopotamus wedding,” as their director of nursing, Kathy Bedard, has loved hippos since she was a child. Bedard, who was a team member, helped residents make hippo heads from peanut-shaped cookies and cheerios. The cookies were propped atop blue-frosted cupcakes to make it look as if the hippos were poking their heads out of the water to watch the wedding. They won the award for most creative, while “Sugar Babes and Dude” won for the decorations on their cupcakes. Sticking with a carnival at the beach theme, they adorned cupcakes with marshmallows drizzled with hot caramel to create the appearance of popcorn drenched in butter. “Cupcake Warriors” took home the award for best overall display with their frog theme. In addition to decorating the cupcakes, they decorated masks and pins. Staff member Louise Wu-Meen designed scrubs covered in frogs for staffers. Here, Assistant Director of Nursing Marguerite Simpson, a member of the “Cupcake Warriors,” shows off their display.
