Forever reinventing itself, rock n roll sometimes changes by rejecting what came before. Glam defied 1960s political rock by becoming decadent and self-indulgent. Punk kicked at 1970s synth rock by stripping down and going fast. Journalist and film buff Steve Starger will attend four pictures about the punk and glam rebellion against mainstream music and culture at Warwick Public Library on Thursdays, April 20 and 27 and May 4 and 11 at 7 p.m. On April 20, overindulge with Velvet Goldmine (1998), starring Ewan McGregor and Christian Bale. Reporter Arthur Stuart digs up the story of glam rock star Brian Slade after his career was ended by a publicity stunt gone wrong. On April 27, go wild with The Runaways (2010), starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. Hard-rock pioneers Joan Jett and Cherie Currie fight against the male-dominated music industry as the leaders of The Runaways. On May 4, hey ho, let's go to Rock n Roll High School (1979), starring P.J. Soles and the Ramones. High schooler and Ramones fan Riff Randell starts a rebellion against her school's anti-rock ‘n roll principal Evelyn Togar. On May 11, get intense with Repo Man (1984), starring Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez. Otto Maddox, a teen punk rocker with no future, encounters a lunatic L.A. underworld when he falls into a job as a repo man. For more information call 739-5440 x9758. The library is located at 600 Sandy Lane. This event is free and open to all.
