God doesn't control guns, we do

To the Editor:

Almost immediately after receiving news about the church attack in Texas, President Trump said it was too soon to discuss gun control. This is a common Republican assertion, but they never seem to disclose a reasonable time to begin discussions. Instead they rely on asking everyone to pray for something good to happen to prevent further slaughter. They’re content to quote Bible verses like “Prayer can move mountains.”

But years of prayer has not changed the situation for the better. If anything, conditions have deteriorated, casualties are skyrocketing, and the prospects are things will get worse unless something drastic is done.

Perhaps we should consider the maxim “God helps those who help themselves.” Maybe He’s been waiting all this time for legislators to at least make a minimal effort to rectify a controllable issue before seeking divine intervention in everyday affairs. It’s long past time for politicians to ignore the NRA and craft some real legislation that will end the carnage.

Barry, the laws ON THE BOOKS WERE NOT FOLLOWED. How in His name can you want MORE gun control? There were laws NOT FOLLOWED. The knee jerk reaction for more gun control when the thousands of laws in place now are not followed is simply mystifying for me...except I know the real reason. People like you who don't think the average person should be armed want gun confiscation. Not going to happen.

How about more enforcement then? Get god involved by riding shotgun in the patrol car and you will people who are killed by guns plummeting.

Fortunately, an armed NRA Certified Instructor intervened (with his own legally-owned AR-15) before the killer could finish walking victim-to-victim and executing everyone; he and another armed citizen, with a legally-owned weapon, chased the killer down until the coward ran off the road and took his own worthless life, thereby saving Texans the cost of a long trial and incarceration.

The USAF failed to inform the FBI that the killer, an atheist, Leftist and Bernie Sanders supporter, was imprisoned and then given a Bad Conduct Discharge which would have prohibited him from purchasing a firearm.

Gun-Free Zones, such as churches, are easy targets for these loons because they think they have a higher chance of success without anyone fighting back; he actually went to a church event the week before to do a reconnaissance.

Now, many suggest that politicians "Do something!" even if that "something" wouldn't have, and won't in the future, prevent anything because it's got nothing to do with GUN control for the Left, it's about CITIZEN control, preventing citizens from legally possessing firearms and allowing only the police and military to possess them- two institutions which the Left also despise and regularly vilify.

The USAF (Government) screwed up and the police show up in time to pick up the pieces.

Remember: "When seconds count, the police are just minutes away".

See you on the range- training others and eating BBQ on Veteran's Day.

Perhaps we should heed Mr. Nordin's words and enact legislation similar to that found in, say, Chicago.

    RISchadenfreude:

Read past the first two days' Twitter-fueled fake headlines. There's little to no evidence of anything you said about the shooter: https://www.buzzfeed.com/talalansari/fake-news-about-the-texas-church-shooting

He was a serial woman-beater. And you claim a fascinating level of insight into his mind. Very telling.

    Crippy Ravin',

I guess you just don't read actual statistics regarding mass shootings- that's almost as frightening as getting one's news from Buzzfeed.

Anything is possible if you don't know what you're talking about.

Here's a statistic for you: Your mythical "good guy with a gun" was 26 people too late in Texas. I'm sure those families appreciate people telling them that they shouldn't have expected to attend services without fear of getting killed.

    Crippy Ravin',

I don't know about you, but I don't subscribe to or get my news from Twitter; please point out anything in the article you cited which refutes anything I stated.

"When seconds count, the police are just minutes away". As I stated before, it would have been worse if an armed citizen hadn't intervened- when shot, the gunman was walking victim-to-victim execution-style; your attitude towards personal defense would be of less comfort to the survivors and families of the victims.

I guess you glossed over my comment regarding Gun-Free Zones as well. In Texas, it's up to the individual house of worship whether they wish to allow parishioners to possess weapons in church; some congregations even have their own security force made up of individuals who are allowed to carry.

As far as your snark regarding my "insight", experience teaches that one needs to know their enemy...unless you prefer to remain ignorant, which seems to be your position.

Instead of imposing your foolish ideas on others, keep doing what you're doing and remain a potential victim, if that works for you: If you don't like guns, don't buy one.

Then there's Chicago, where a slow-motion massacre occurs every month- an average of 50 dead PER MONTH ; however, their leadership is party-line Democrat, it's predominantly black-on-black crime, and has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, so don't expect the MSM to cover it because it doesn't fit the Left's narrative. Just goes to illustrate the criminals' regard for the laws.

I always find it amusing that the Left believes that taking away the right of others and giving them solely to the military (like the USAF) and the police (in this case, the FBI), two institutions which are constantly vilified by them, will fix everything. When will they admit that it's about controlling people and not firearms?

Funny how the uninformed get so dismissive when confronted with facts & logic...

"Whatever..." My mistake - I thought I was replying to an adult, not a 14-year-old girl....that reply is a good indication there's no more intelligent response forthcoming.

From appearances, all you understand is your narrow point of view and stereotypes...a real shame for a supposed adult.

The question is, do you understand any opinions outside your pointed head?

If you don't like firearms, don't buy one- it's a serious responsibility, and I understand if people can't, or choose not to accept it or exercise it.

People so often say, "I know my rights!" (which they usually don't) and entirely neglect to mention their responsibilities, whether legal or common decency.
