Gower commits to D1 UMass

Rising Bishop Hendricken senior outfielder Kevin Gower has carved out quite the reputation in the Rhode Island baseball community.

Gower emerged as one of the top players for Hendricken as a junior, and has caught the eye of college programs in his first three years. Gower’s hard work and performance paid off, as he recently signed his National Letter of Intent to play college baseball for the Division I University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, Massachusetts.

“It feels great. It was a long time, a lot of camps, a lot of showcases, a lot of time put into it from my parents to me. I’m very relieved to find such a great college to move onto academically and to play for at the next level,” said Gower, who thanked the UMass coaching staff for also guiding him through the selection process. “The best part was the coaches, they really helped me make my decision and helped me realize how much I liked (UMass), especially from an academic standpoint too.”

Although Gower has committed to playing at UMass, he also hopes to continue to work hard and sharpen some areas of his game during his senior season at Hendricken next spring.

“I’m definitely going to keep grinding and continue to work hard to play at the next level. I’m going to compete the whole way through and I’m going to keep my level (of play) as high as it can possibly be for college,” said Gower.

Heading from high school to the Division I level is a tall task, but Gower believes that he is up to the challenge and looks forward to testing his metal against his future competition.

“The pitching will be a lot different. Guys are going to be grinding and competing because they’ll want to go to the next level after that. I’m looking forward to that, I’m also looking forward to the offensive side of the game and the hitters and trying to rob them in the outfield. I’m going to continue to work hard and I’ll do whatever the coaches ask of me,” said Gower.

As for the 2019 spring, Gower has high hopes for the Hawks and believes that they have the pieces to make one last championship run before graduation.

“This year we will be really strong, we have a lot of great ball players that come through here,” said Gower. “Our 2019 class is very strong and so is our 2020 class. I hope that we can go on and win a state championship in our final year. We definitely have a great coaching staff here too that helps us make the right decisions and help us through the season.”
