A Florida man found with a .22 caliber handgun in his carry-on bag was arrested at T.F. Green International on Sunday, according to a statement from the federal Transportation Security Administration.
Authorities say the firearm was discovered via an X-ray machine at the airport’s security checkpoint. The man – identified only as a resident of Indian River County, Florida – was detained for questioning. He reportedly told authorities he did not know how the weapon, which was confiscated, came into his possession.
TSA said the incident marks the third time a firearm has been discovered at the airport’s security checkpoint this year. One of the other cases occurred within the last two weeks.
The statement indicates that 4,239 firearms were found in carry-on bags at airport security checkpoints around the country last year – an increase of roughly 7 percent over 2017. Eighty-six percent of those weapons were loaded and approximately a third had a round in the chamber, according to TSA.
