Warwick high school gymnastics is off to a strong start as a new team.

The Toll Gate/Pilgrim co-op program traveled to South Kingstown High School on Friday night to face off with the Rebels, and the Warwick squad was able to earn the win in their first league meet of the season. Starting on floor, the team tested the waters as it shook its nerves away during a solid start, posting a 32.75.

Moving to vault – Toll Gate/Pilgrim’s strongest event – the team kept the energy up, earning its highest event team total of 33.3. Bars is a tough event, but the athletes managed to swing big and earn a 30.25.

Although nerves crept into the team on the balance beam, which is known to make or break a team, Toll Gate/Pilgrim did not let a few falls stop it from earning a 30.15. The athletes left it all out on the floor, edging out South Kingstown by just under a point for the win, 127.50-126.55. Along with the team win, there were several individual state championship qualifications, including: Danielle Breault on vault, Tierra Frey on floor and Anna Cetera on each individual event and in the all-around. These are the first of two qualifying scores needed to earn a spot at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League state championships in February.
