H. Michael Planka
H. Michael Planka, 90, formerly of Lansdowne Road, Warwick, died March 17, 2012 at Sunny View Nursing Home, Warwick. He was the husband of Mary E. (Steadman) Planka. Mr. and Mrs. Planka were married on Jan. 12, 1946.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Albert and Teckla (Chichlowska) Planka, he lived in Warwick since 1930. He was a graduate of Aldrich Sr. High School in Warwick and a 1952 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II and attained the rank of Captain. The pilot of a B24J Liberator, he flew 30 missions over Germany.
Mr. Planka was an architect with the former Castellucci, Galli & Planka Associates in Providence for 22 years. He later established the architectural firm H. Michael Planka & Associates. Among his well-known architectural designs were Pilgrim High School in Warwick, the Slavin Center at Providence College, the URI Student Union, the Geodesic Dome on Airport Road in Warwick, the Turnkey Post Office on Corliss Street (the first automated post office) and various elderly housing and schools.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Michael A. Planka of Providence; a daughter, Jana M. Planka of Narragansett; two grandchildren, Michael A. Planka and Nora J. Planka; and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late David M. Planka and brother of the late Joseph, Stanley, Edward and Henry Planka and Wanda (Planka) Deignan.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial March 24 at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church, 350 Fair St., Warwick. Burial with military honors will follow in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick. Visiting hours are omitted.
