The Bishop Hendricken swim team picked up some momentum heading into this Saturday’s RIIL state meet by cruising to victory at the Division I championship meet at Roger Williams University on Sunday.

The Hawks were dominant, compiling 524 points. Barrington followed in second with 433 points, and La Salle claimed third after totaling 217 points.

The team of Lucas Stencel, Grant Dator, Aidan Blanchette and Mike Lupino won the medley relay with a time of 1:42.87.

From there, the Hawks had multiple top finishers in the individual events. C.J. Sheldon cruised to victory in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.61, and he was followed by teammates Dillane Wehbe and John Walden, who finished third and seventh, respectively.

The Hawks then placed four swimmers inside the top seven in the IM. Stencel led that group in second with a time of 1:58.46. Mike Ryan earned fifth, Kevin Sawyer finished sixth and Ryan McPherson followed in seventh. Lupino, Blanchette, and William Fitzgerald earned fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 50 free, before Blanchette earned second in the 100 fly with a time of 54.86 seconds, while Jon Smith took third and John Byrne produced an eighth-place finish.

Sheldon secured his second individual win in the 100 free, finishing at 50.02 seconds. Fitzgerald (fifth) and Lupino (sixth) also performed well in the 100 free. Ryan (4:58.52) paced four Hawks in the top seven in the 500 free with a third-place finish, followed by Wehbe in fourth, Walden in sixth and Sawyer in seventh.

The 200 free relay team of Lupino, Blanchette, Sheldon and Wehbe kept the momentum rolling with a second-place swim with a time of 1:32.20.

Stencel followed by grabbing an individual win in the 100 backstroke, gliding past the competition in 53.14 seconds. McPherson chipped in with a fifth-place finish in the 100 back, and Smith was right behind him in sixth.

Dator earned first in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:04.85, and Luca Ialongo also had a strong swim in third, followed by Paul Fedorenko in fourth.

The Hawks then fell to a very strong Barrington group in the 400 free relay, with the team of Stencel, Sheldon, Ryan and Wehbe earning second with an impressive time of 3:18.00.

“We had the third-best time in the 400 free relay in our history, and they beat us by three seconds,” Hendricken head coach Dave Hanson said of Barrington. “They have some studs over there. They’re phenomenal.”

Hendricken will now turn its attention to the RIIL state championship meet, which will take place on Saturday at Brown University at 9 a.m.

“It’s going to come down to our depth guys,” Hanson said regarding the state meet. “They’ll have to come through.”

Hendricken will be looking to capture its fourth consecutive state title and 31st in school history.
