Hawks host lax camp

Bishop Hendricken and Hawks lacrosse coach David Haddeland are hosted the second annual Hawks Academy lacrosse camp at the school this week.

The numbers have nearly doubled since the first year, and Haddeland was excited to get to work with some of the local players throughout the week. The camp hosts kids from all throughout Rhode Island, with ages ranging from grades 3 through 9.

“It was a nice little jump (in numbers). We hope that the numbers continue to jump and we can keep going. I started it last year thinking that it would be a good way to expose the school and expose myself as a coach since I am still fairly new here in Rhode Island. The kids have fun here, I think we picked the perfect time slot since most camps are over, it’s almost like a last camp for these guys,” said Haddeland of the camp.

Haddeland is entering his third season as the Hawks head coach, and his eighth season at Hendricken overall. He was also the associate head coach at Salve Regina, and coached at the high school level in New York as well.

Haddeland’s goal for the camp is to teach the basics as well as some of the more advanced techniques, while also showing the players all the benefits to gain from the sport.

“It’s a little bit of both. Ultimately, we’re just trying to grow the game, this is a wonderful game that has been so (good) to me. My biggest thing is just trying to grow it in Rhode Island, that’s what I want. It doesn’t matter where they play, whether it’s here or La Salle, I don’t care as long as they’re playing because this game has given me a lot,” said Haddeland.

The camp also welcomes former players and coaches. Between on field instruction, pep talks, and other presentations, Haddeland and company hope to provide kids with the best teaching that they can receive at the local level.

“We talk about a lot of things here, not just lacrosse. We have a lot of guys here, we’ve had a lot of former players, we had (Salve Regina Coach) Patrick Cooney give a presentation. We have these guys come in and speak in order to show these kids what lacrosse has given them,” said Haddeland. “We do a lot of instructional work, we do some drill work, then the last day we do more games and get into some of the fun stuff. Our goal really is just to continue to grow the sport here.”
