The Bishop Hendricken football team topped visiting Cumberland 36-14 last Friday evening during its first league matchup of the 2019 season.

The Hawks cruised to a 27-7 lead by the halftime break and handed the game over to their second unit in the second half to close things out.

Hendricken would get on the board early when the defense returned an interception for a touchdown, followed by quarterback Tom Comella rushing for a long score to give the Hawks the 13-0 advantage.

Cumberland would get in the end zone to cut the lead to 13-7 after one quarter of action, however, the Hendricken offense would get right back to work in the second and get a touchdown when Comella connected with Jordan Robbins on fourth down for the score. Helio Sousa would later haul in a touchdown reception of his own to extend the Hendricken lead to 27-7 in the second quarter.

Backup quarterback Zach Lavergne would step in as the signal caller for the final two quarters and produce, connecting with Andrew Noland in the third quarter, throwing for his first-ever varsity touchdown. The Hendricken defense would come up big late in the third when it forced a Cumberland safety and extended the lead to 36-7 heading into the final frame.

Cumberland would score one last time to set the score to 36-14.

Hendricken improved to 2-0 and 1-0 in league play. The Hawks will travel to North Kingstown for a big Division I matchup this Friday. The Skippers won the Division I Super Bowl last fall.
