Hawks run well at Great American XC Festival


In its first taste of top competition this season, the Bishop Hendricken cross country team delivered a solid performance. The Hawks traveled to Cary, N.C., for the Great American Cross Country Festival and finished 10th in the high school race of champions.

The Hawks were led by Tyler Henseler, who placed 44th overall. He completed the 5K course in 15 minutes, 48.9 seconds. Connor Doyle was close behind in 50th, Colin Tierney finished 92nd, Alex Doherty was 96th, Michael Potter finished 100th, Greg Beaudette finished in 125th place and Collin Manning rounded out the lineup with a 161st place finish.

The Hawks finished with 344 points. Christian Brothers Academy of New Jersey won the title with 60 points. The team placed four runners in the top 10 and six in the top 30. St. Xavier High School of Louisville, Ky., was second with 148 points.

Chariho’s Bryce Kelly was the top Rhode Island finisher. He crossed the line in 15:45.3.

Titans compete in Ocean State Invitational

The Toll Gate boys’ and girls’ teams both took to the course at Goddard Park over the weekend along with teams from across the region for the sixth annual Ocean State Invitational. The Titan girls finished 16th in the Varsity I race, while the boys took 25th in their Varsity I race.

The girls team was led by sophomore Erika Pena, who placed 36th overall in a field of 213 runners. She finished in a time of 21:25.54 and was fourth among Rhode Islanders in the race. Danielle Petrangelo finished 89th, Abby Tillotson was 103rd, Casey Soares finished 123rd, Katie Lavallee was 126th, Jess Cawley finished in 152nd.

Pat Rocchio was the top finisher for the boys in 101st place with a time of 18:32.40. Brock Massa finished 112th, Evan Carley grabbed 152nd, Ben Dinobile finished 162nd and Alex Pires finished 178th.
