Central Falls tops Hawks

The Hawks fell to the Central Falls Warriors 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Bishop Hendricken High School during a boys soccer clash.

Christion Restrepo topped the Warriors with two assists while Hendricken got a goal from Mike Hanlon, a senior captain.

All three Warriors goals came in the first half and from three different scorers in Juan Blandon, Leidson Gomes, and Lester Jimenez.

“Hendricken did a great job in that second 40 just putting pressure,” Central Falls head coach Carl Africo said. “The wind doesn’t help. When you’re playing into the wind, you’ve got to keep it down. You’ve got to be more technical and I thought Hendricken was the better side in the second half at doing that.”

Doing the goalkeeping for the Warriors was Junior Rosa, who made eight saves, while Hendricken senior Jake White stopped nine.

The Warriors scored their first goal, six and a half minutes into the contest when Blandon used his left foot and booted a bullet into the back of the net from 30 yards out.

Next, with 15:19 remaining in the opening frame, Central Falls upped its advantage to 2-0 after Gomes accepted a cross pass from Restrepo and fired a rocket into the cage.

Then, Central Falls increased its buffer to 3-0 with 8:16 left when Jimenez found the back of the net following another cross from Restrepo.

The Hawks inched within two at 3-1, eight minutes into the second half when Hanlon scored during a penalty kick after his teammate Brady McNamara was tripped by a Warriors defender on his way to the goal.

“They brought their A game and we were a little bit off our game in the first half,” Hendricken assistant coach William Johnston Jr. said. “A much better effort in the second half.”

And Johnston hopes his team can carry that second-half momentum into the rest of the season.

“We’re coming along,” Johnston said. “It’s going to take a little while to jell. Hopefully, we’ll be there sooner rather than later. But, I think we’re making progress, baby steps towards where we eventually want to be.”

Hendricken falls to 1-1 on the season. The Hawks beat Coventry 1-0 in their opening game last Wednesday.

There are three seniors on the team that will play big roles in determining how well the Hawks do this year.

“Our three captains, Mike Hanlon, AJ Guindon, and Colby Cuthill are three tremendous young men and great leaders and great players,” Johnston explained. “So, they’re the ones that are really leading the team.”

Hendricken plays next on Tuesday at home against Central (1-0-1) at 6 pm.
