Hawks top powerhouse Barrington

The Bishop Hendricken swimming team topped visiting powerhouse Barrington 58-35 last week at the McDermott Pool.

The two clubs sat atop the standings with a combined 11-0 record heading into Friday’s meet.

However, it would be the defending state champion Hawks that would prove to be the unquestioned best team in the state.

“They’re as good as we are, this is our home pool, (the mindset) was different. The times for all of our races were awesome, that’s what it is all about,” said Hendricken coach Dave Hanson after the win.

CJ Sheldon led the way for the Hawks, taking home first-place finishes in the 50 free and 100 free. He also helped the Hendricken win the 200 medley and the 200 free relays.

Hendricken’s Nick Andrews won the 200 freestyle, while Tim Andrews won the IM.

Nick Andrews also won the 500 free, while Ryan McPherson won the back stroke, and Grant Dator won the breaststroke.

McPherson, Dator and Tim Andrews joined Sheldon in winning the 200 medley, while Sheldon, Aidan Blanchette, John Walden and Nick Andrews joined to win the 200 free relay.

Walden, McPherson, and Tim and Nick Andrews combined to win the 400 free relay.

The Hawks now take control of first place in Division 1, and Hanson is happy to see his team trending upward as the larger meets approach.

“We learned that we’re tough and that we can get tougher. A dual meet is different is different than a championship meet, the relays are different and we swept the relays which probably won’t happen at states. We’ve been struggling with the 200 free relay all season and won today which was good to see,” said Hanson.

Hanson also expects for Barrington to stay in the picture for the remainder of the way as well.

“It’s Barrington, they’re good. But what happens happens,” said Hanson. “There’s a lot of room for improvement, they’re going to improve too. We just need to keep working.”
