Hawks top Raiders

The Bishop Hendricken football team continued to roll this season as it beat the visiting Shea Raiders 34-14 last week during the team’s senior night at the school.

Hendricken would jump out to a quick 20-0 lead in the first quarter and never look back, as they wrapped up their regular season undefeated in league play and will next compete in the State Championship.

Hendricken quarterback Tom Comella would connect with Angel Sanchez for two touchdown passes, while Nic Comella and James Gobewole would each rush for scores as well.

Nic Comella also had a strong outing on the defensive side of the ball, hauling in an interception and returning it for a score in the first quarter.

The Hawks will now square off against Portsmouth in two weeks as they seek their 10th state title in 11 seasons.

The Hawks also welcomed in a couple guests prior to kickoff last week.

Joining the Hawks was Quinn Miller, a local football player for the Darlington Braves of Pawtucket, where she plays wide receiver and cornerback.

Miller has been the center of attention in the past couple weeks, sharing her experience as a girl player in a predominately male sport.

“I hope all of the support and attention my story has received is an inspiration for any girl who has ever wanted to play football, and I hope it gives anyone who is being bullied the strength to continue doing what they love,” said Miller in a statement prior to the game.

Miller joined the Hawks as a team captain at the coin toss and led the pack as they entered the field during the pregame introductions.

Flipping the coin was Aram Garabedian, managing partner of the Warwick Mall. He is also a former Hendricken football coach.

His career also includes stints as the President of the Cranston City Council, a member of the Cranston School Committee, the Rhode Island House of Representatives, and the Rhode Island Senate.
