Hawks win freshman title, TG girls second
Bishop Hendricken won the boys’ indoor track freshman state championship on Monday, while Toll Gate finished a close second to La Salle in the girls’ championship on Tuesday.
The Hawks were led by Lee Moses and Michael Potter, who each won two events. Moses placed first in the 300 and the long jump, while Potter won the 1,000 and the 1,500. The Hawks amassed 156 points, well ahead of second-place North Kingstown, who totaled 47.
Four other Hawks also delivered first-place finishes. Donte Bell won the shot put and also placed fifth in the weight throw, Ben Murphy won the high jump, Grant Gauthier took first in the 3,000 and fourth in the 1,000, and Power Kanga won the 55-meter dash. Kanga added a second-place finish in the 300 and a fourth in the long jump, while Moses added a second in the 55-meter dash to his two first-place finishes.
Also for the Hawks, Tom Grizetti took second in the 3,000, Brennan Martin placed third in the 1,000, Jared Boulanger finished fourth in the 600, Chris Ferreira placed fifth in the 3,000, Alex Torcoletti took fifth in the high jump, Walt Fitzhugh took sixth in the 3,000 and Nick Stravato placed sixth in the dash.
The Hawks also won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
Pilgrim’s Dylan Cote was the lone place-winner from Warwick schools, grabbing fifth in the shot put. The Pats also got a fifth-place finish from their 4x400 relay team.
Titans narrowly miss title
On the girls’ side, Toll Gate finished in second place, just 3.5 points behind La Salle for the title.
The Titans were led by Erika Pena, who placed in three events. She finished first in the 1,000, second in the 1,500 and tied for third in the high jump. Nora Hall added a first-place finish in the 600 for the Titans. Jess Cawley finished fourth in the 3,000 and Jordan Inkley took fourth in the shot put.
The Titans also took second in the 4x400 relay and third in the 4x800.
Pilgrim’s Melanie Brunelle also had a big night, placing second in the high jump, third in the 1,000 and fifth in the 1,500.
