Helen Mary Brown Boyens


Helen Mary Brown Boyens, 87, of Wooster, Ohio passed away February 3, 2013 at Wooster Community Hospital.

She was born March 5, 1925 in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of Frederick Nathan, Brown Jr. and Helen May (Brakenwagen). She married Ralph Vernon Boyens on September 28, 1946 at Central Congregational Church, Providence, RI, and moved to Chicago, Illinois. He survives. She graduated from Classical High School and Katherine Gibbs School in Providence, RI Following graduation from KGS she worked as a secretary at American Mutual Insurance Company of America, Universal Winding (Cranston) and Manufacturers Mutual Fire Insurance of America. She transferred to the Chicago Office of MMFIA in the Fields Building on Van Buren in Chicago and also worked for American National Bank of Chicago as an Executive Secretary. While in Chicago Helen gave birth to daughter Norah Helen Boyens (Lloyd) Bertschy and Martha Anne Boyens (Jon) Bollinger. They moved to Wooster in 1958 due to Ralph’s employment with Borg Warner. They lived in Wooster over 30 years. While in Wooster, she gave birth to a son John Frederick (Mary Jo) Boyens and a daughter Ida Mary Jane Boyens. While in Wooster, she was active in Welcome Wagon, was Presiding Judge for Board of Elections, member of Wayne County Arts & Crafts Guild, OARDC Homemakers Club, member of Zion Lutheran Church and active in Matins Mothers, Eisleben Matins circles, and a choir member, member of the Wooster Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and Wimodaus and in Rhode Island the Christian Women’s Club. She enjoyed arts and crafts, was known for her paintings, calligraphy and artistic endeavors. In Wooster, she had worked for Dr. Thomas G. Stephens and was later employed by the Wooster Community Hospital in Admitting. They retired to Helen’s family home in Cedar Tree Point, Warwick, RI where they lived for 20 years before returning to their new home in Apple Valley, Howard, Ohio. They resided with Helen’s daughter, Norah, and her family in Cincinnati, Ohio from 2007 to mid-2012 and moved to Wayne Manor Assisted Living in August 2012.

Grandmother of nine, Carrie Bertschy, Ellen Bertschy (Larry) Cobler, Doug Bertschy, Katie Bollinger (Jonathan) Stull, Nathan Bollinger, Matt Boyens, Leah Boyens, Josh Boyens-Brittle, Joe Boyens. Great-grandmother to Wesly Bertschy-Hogue, Vincent and Evan Cobler; with a great-granddaughter that will be born in July 2013. In addition to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren she is survived by her brother, Frederick Nathan Brown, III, nephews Erick and Andy and a niece Kathy.

Friends will be received two hours prior to the 5:00 p.m. service on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at the McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster, Ohio with the Rev. Ann Paynter officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Providence, Rhode Island.
