Bishop Hendricken wasn’t able to defend its indoor track state crown on Saturday at the Providence Career and Technical Academy, but it did post another impressive effort, earning second place at the RIIL state championship meet.
La Salle was the only team to finish ahead of the Hawks, as the rival Rams compiled a meet-best 70 points, 14 points ahead of Hendricken with 56, and Classical followed in third with 40 points.
Hendricken failed to produce any individual state champions, but it did have several top-10 finishers.
In the 1000-meter run, sophomore Matt St. Jean placed third with a time of 2:38.91, and teammate and fellow sophomore David Delbonis wasn’t far behind with a sixth-place finish in a time of 2:41.20. St. Jean and Delbonis continued to shine in the 1500 as well, as Delbonis took third this time, with St. Jean earning sixth and junior Nick Braz following in eighth while posting a time of 4:16.09.
The Hawks kept rolling in the distance events, with four Hawks placing in the top 10 in the 3000-meter run. Junior Jack McMahon led that group, placing fourth with a time of 9:00.26. Junior Ryan Mallozzi then took sixth shortly after, and sophomore Luke Henseler secured eighth and junior Aidan Tierney took ninth.
The Hawks then had a bevy of strong finishes in the other events. Junior Seun Filaoye earned sixth with a time of 8.09 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, and fellow junior Russell White crossed the finish line in third in the 55-meter dash in 6.61 seconds.
Moving to the field events, junior Duwuan Edwards and senior Luke Swift took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the high jump, senior Kahlin Watkins placed eighth in the long jump, junior Xavier Truss impressed in the shot put and finished third and junior Ryan Morel secured an eighth-place finish in the weight throw.
Next up for the Hawks will be the New England High School Championship, which is slated for Saturday, March 3 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
