Five Hawks sign National Letters of Intent

Bishop Hendricken has enjoyed perhaps its most successful school year ever in cross country as well as track and field. Between state championships and impressive outings at both the regional and national levels, the Hawks have developed one of the top programs in each in the country.

Five members of these teams signed their National Letters of Intent at Hendricken on Tuesday afternoon, further adding to these clubs’ historic resumes.

Max Paolino signed to compete for the Assumption College track and field team, while Duwaun Edwards and Russell White signed to compete for the University of Rhode Island. Ryan Morel signed to compete in track and field for Rutgers, while Aidan Tierney signed to run cross country for Elon University.

“I can always count on Max to smile every single day when he comes to practice, I’m truly going to miss him next year. Max is his toughest critic of his performance, however, Max had amazing progress in his four years. I believe that he will have an even better career in college than he did here at Hendricken,” said Hendricken assistant coach Billy Johnston of Paolino, who took home the indoor state championship in shot put.

Morel will also be throwing for the Scarlet Knights. Morel was the outdoor New England champion in the hammer throw.

“Ryan works hard every single day at practice, he puts the time in, and fittingly, he’s getting a scholarship from Rutgers for dominating a sport that is meant for giants. The intensity he brings into the circle, it’s fun to watch him throw … it’s fun watching a smaller guy throw so incredibly far,” said Johnston.

Tierney will leave behind one of the top resumes in school history as a two-time All-New England cross country runner and making the All-New England track team.

“Aidan Tierney came to us having never made his varsity middle school team. His brother Colin was the 2008 cross country individual state champion, he had big shoes to fill. Aidan learned that to be successful in distance running, you have to become dedicated and committed to the sport. He had to forget what his brother accomplished, and as coach (Dan) Brennan would say, become his own man and leave his own legacy … and he did,” said Hendricken cross country and track coach Jim Doyle, who was recently named the national coach of the year. “He was second on our team at the nationals with an impressive time, to help his team to its most impressive accomplishment in its cross country history.”

White won’t have to travel far, as he signed on to compete for URI. White holds the school records for the 55-meter dash, the 100 dash as well as the sprint medley relay.

“Russell is a typical Hendricken man. He comes from a great, loving and supporting family, and he carries himself with a quiet confidence. Russell White is one of the most individually accomplished sprinters that we have had at Hendricken,” said Hendricken assistant coach James Lourenco. “What I’m going to remember the most about Russell, is coming in during the summer and opening the weight room so he could get a lift in, and all the times he would ask what he could do in the fall to get ready for winter and spring track, and the group of guys that he would lead down to the track. Those guys loved to follow leaders like Russ.”

Five-time track and field state champion Edwards will be joining his close friend with the Rams.

“I think the most underrated thing about Duwaun is his ability to always take his game to the next level at the state meets. Our program is in a better spot than it was four years ago, and it is because of the leadership and tremendous character of these young men, and Duwaun is a great example of that,” said Hendricken assistant coach John Manning. “Duwaun has set a great model for the younger athletes and has been an excellent mentor for them. Duwaun and Russell would always joke about running track together in college, and I think that it’s poetic that it’s coming to fruition.”
