Hendricken to host Coaches vs. Cancer event on Friday
The Bishop Hendricken basketball team is partnering with the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to host a Coaches vs. Cancer event at Friday’s home game against St. Raphael. The Hawks started a fundraising effort earlier this year, which will culminate with Friday’s 7 p.m. game against the Saints.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. It empowers coaches, teams and their communities at every level of basketball to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
The organization evolved from a fundraising effort started by former University of Missouri head coach Norm Stewart, a cancer survivor, who challenged fans to pledge a dollar amount for every three points made by his team during the season.
In 1993, the American Cancer Society and the NABC adopted that idea, and since then, it has blossomed into a nationwide effort, and has recently reached into high-school basketball. Since its inception, Coaches vs. Cancer has raised nearly $50 million to support the American Cancer Society’s mission.
Friday’s game will wrap up Hendricken’s own efforts, and it’ll also be a big game on the court. The Hawks have won nine consecutive league games, including one against second-place Central. The match-up with the Saints, who have an 11-2 record and are the defending state champions, offers the Hawks another chance at a marquee victory.
