High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island to bring academic team competition to TV

In a new adventure for Rhode Island high school students looking to brandish their brain power among peers for the glory of winning a championship title, WSBE Rhode Island PBS launches High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island, a team-based single-elimination competition among qualifying high schools. The Ocean State's version of the WGBH award-winning series,  High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island invites academic excellence and collegial competition in pursuit of scholastic achievement and recognition.

"It has long been a dream of ours to bring this competitive opportunity to the young scholars of our state," said Rhode Island PBS President David W. Piccerelli. "Other New England states have televised academic competitions, but there is nothing quite like this in Rhode Island, until now. We are pleased to work with our public media colleagues in Massachusetts to make this a reality for our Rhode Island students."

All public, private, and parochial high schools in Rhode Island are eligible to participate. Each school assembles one team comprised of four members and up to two alternates. Schools are invited to register their team for the one-day "Super Sunday" qualifying quiz, administered in the fall by WSBE Rhode Island PBS, to determine the eight competing teams. Once selected, the eight school teams will face off in seven single-elimination rounds, taped at Rhode Island PBS studios over two consecutive days (one weekend). The winning team of High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island may compete in an invitational interstate competition with winning teams from other New England states.  High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island will air over seven weeks in the spring of 2018.

"This is a comprehensive community effort, with support from the Rhode Island Department of Education, individual school boards, high school principals, and teachers, parents, and our own Rhode Island PBS Foundation board," Piccerelli said. "We are very pleased to have all of the pieces falling into place at this time, and to announce this latest project that serves the community, and advances our own mission of celebrating education, cultural diversity, and fortifying local community connections."

Guidelines, dates for both the qualifying quiz event and competition weekend, testing standards and resources, and other relevant information about High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island for school administrators and academic coaches, as well as information about corporate sponsorship opportunities, will be available on the Rhode Island PBS Web site, ripbs.org.
