Jack McMahon named Gatorade Runner of Year

Bishop Hendricken’s Jack McMahon recently put his name in the history books, being named the Gatorade cross country runner for the year for his performance in the fall.

McMahon, a senior, has been one of the Hawks’ top runners during his tenure at Hendricken. He placed second overall at the state championship and guided the Hawks to the team title. He also was a key component in the team taking fourth place at the Nike Nationals in Oregon as well.

On a separate note, McMahon also helped Hendricken take home the recent 2018-19 indoor track state championship with his performances in the distance events, in which he took first in the 3,000 run.

“I was kind of surprised. I knew that I was in contention for it. I didn’t think I was going to get it because only one non-state champion has ever won it so I figured it would go to Joe (dosReis) from La Salle. The morning of I checked and it had not been out, I checked again in the afternoon and was surprised when I found out ... it was a great feeling,” said McMahon of the news.

Hendricken cross country is one of the handful of programs in the school that has garnered national recognition. McMahon feels that his success, as well as the program’s, is much thanks to the coaching staff including head coach Jim Doyle.

“It starts with the coaches, they care about every athlete. There are 40 guys on the team and they care about every one. They’re consistent, we’re always getting our miles in, they have set practices for us six days a week and a captains practice on the seventh. We’re always working hard to do our best. It starts with the coaches and I couldn’t have done it without them. There’s also a constant support system with my teammates as well,” said McMahon.

Between individual and team championships, McMahon has built quite the resume for himself during his high school career. He will be competing next fall for Division I Davidson.

“This is a great award but coming in fourth at nationals was pretty big as well. It’s a testament to the team too, it’s not an award that I could have won without the support of my teammates and my family. It shows what as a team we can do,” said McMahon.

McMahon is excited to add his name to the school’s, as well as the state’s history, and to leave his mark for the next generation of runners to compete at Hendricken.

“It feels really great. Ryan Meehan won it, Colin Tierney won it, so to see my name on that list of names that have won it is pretty cool,” said McMahon. “We’ve had goals since freshman year. We knew that we wanted to go to nationals, we knew that by junior or senior year that we wanted to end La Salle’s streak, so knowing that we have turned the tide is good.”
