a registered nurse
Joan Learned, 73, of Palermo, Maine, passed away peacefully March 12, 2012 with her daughter, son and friends by her side.
Joan resided in Maine for most of the past 15 years; she lived the majority of her life in Warwick. Joan also lived for a short time in Germany, where her daughter, Debra, was born.
Joan graduated from Warwick Veterans Memorial High School in 1957, then went on to be a part of the first graduating class from the Rhode Island School of Practical Nursing in 1959. From there, Joan went on to New Hampshire School of Nursing and graduated in 1963 as a registered nurse.
For over 40 years Joan was a respected nurse, trainer, case manager, mentor and friend to countless patients and co-workers throughout New England with such companies as Universal Optical, Continental Insurance and Assistance Plus. Joan had a thirst for knowledge and growth and, as a result, received countless professional certifications. By the end of her career Joan held the titles of RN and CSS.
Joan loved sports. She not only participated but also coached numerous teams. When Joan was not on the field of play, she was an avid supporter of countless area teams from youth to professional and attended as many events as possible. As those who attended games with her know all too well, there was never doubt as to whom Joan was rooting for.
Joan also loved gardening and cooking. She was happiest when she could combine the two and create incredible meals for friends and family using ingredients from her garden. No one left Joan’s house hungry or empty handed. Joan was a strong, determined woman who always made an impression and touched countless lives, even strangers, with her generosity and caring.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Debra Learned; a son, Douglas Learned; a granddaughter, Emily Meehan; a sister, Susan Beckett; a brother, Kenneth Beckett; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her mother, Dorothy Beckett, a brother, Richard Beckett, and a nephew, Jon Conway.
There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. March 24 at Washington Village Church, 33 Liberty Rd., Washington, Maine. For friends and family in Rhode Island, there will be an informal brunch to honor Joan on March 31 at 10 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza, Warwick.
