Johnston rings in St. Patrick’s Day

Two Johnston Housing Authority Tenants Associations and the town’s Senior Center celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in style last week.

At Pell Manor, William “Bill” Santilli, who serves as president of the Tenants Association and simply stated “I’m Italian” at the outset of last Thursday’s fun-filled dinner, and the Tenants Association had not one but two dinner offerings, the traditional corned beef and cabbage as well as spaghetti and meatballs that was prepared and served by Ralph’s Catering.

And, although it was a day for wearing of the green and the community room was decked out in shamrock wall-hangings, the tenants enjoyed those caloric creations called zeppoles that came from famed Borelli’s Bakery.

On Friday, the JSC was also donned in green – from mini paint can-like centerpieces featuring green and white carnations – and inflated balloons were abound inside the multi-purpose community room.

Meanwhile, noted singer-entertainer Janine Andrews put on another super show and even had sing-a-longs with volunteer servers and members. More than 100 people showed up and enjoyed corned beef with mustard, seasoned boiled potatoes along with a cabbage and carrot medley was the event’s lunch, with lime Jell-O for dessert.

The JSC’s St. Patrick’s party was also highlighted by a lottery drawing for a huge raffle basket that was filled with a variety of Rhode Island Lottery scratch tickets and donated by Lorraine DiLorenzo on behalf of the Cherry Hill Nursing and Rehab Center. The lucky winner was Linda Valenti, while Alegria Vaughn Bailey and Doris Graham won free raffles.

At the Aime J. Forand Housing Complex off Greenville Avenue, the Tenants Association – just as they did for its snowy Valentine’s Day Party – enjoyed the musical and singing talents of Steve Cass and Donna and special presentations by Rhode Island State Rep. Deborah A. Fellela.

Fellela enjoyed the night’s dinner and conversation and president Tenants Association President Bev Williams, Vice President Ann Izzi, Treasurer Janice Grande and Secretary Natalie Cardinal with official House of Representatives citations.

In keeping with tradition, the association brought in Ralph’s Catering that prepared and served a corned beef and cabbage dinner as well as chicken marsala.
