Joseph J. Laffey, Jr.


Joseph J. Laffey, Jr., 87, died November 30, 2012. He was the husband for 57 years of the late Margaret A. “Peggy” (Riley) Laffey.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Joseph J. and Lillian (Harris) Laffey, he was a lifelong Warwick resident and a founding member of St. Peter Church. Mr. Laffey retired in 1985 after 39 years with NE Tel & Tel, now Verizon. He was a member of the Warwick Council Knights of Columbus and the Telephone Pioneers. Mr. Laffey was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy Armed Guard. He was a survivor of the sinking of the SS Daniel C. French, a Liberty ship in the Mediterranean in March 1944. He also was a member of the 43rd Infantry Division Signal Co. serving during the Korean War.

He is survived by three sons, Joseph J. (Laureen), Michael H. (Julie), and John T. Laffey, two daughters Mary Mahmoud, and Ann Harbison (David). He was the father of the late Margaret Beagen and father-in-law of Joseph Beagen. He also leaves two sisters, Helen Garceau, and Lillian Schmidt. Also survived by thirteengrandchildren.

His funeral will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church, Fair Street. Burial with Military Honors in Pawtuxet Memorial Park. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 p.m.
