Kids join in the fun at Santa's workshop

Surely, you know what magical Christmas dust is made with.

Ask any of the kids who visited Santa’s workshop at the Kent County YMCA and they know it’s a mix containing glitter and oats. Oats? Yes, oats, because reindeer like oats. And glitter? Of course, glitter will help Santa find your house on Christmas Eve.

After mixing the “dust,” kids took it home to sprinkle on their lawns. They also got to take home candy canes they made from colored pipe cleaners and red and white beads, bell tree ornaments and pinecones they painted white for snow.

More than 130 kids and their families visited the workshop Saturday, stopping first to meet with Santa seated in his sleigh, enjoy homemade chocolate chip cookies and hot cocoa, just what was needed to ward off the cold. Inside the kids met Mrs. Claus, who helped them choose stickers and then, with the help of volunteer “elves,” leafed through magazines to see what they might like for Christmas. Once they’d made their picks, out came scissors. The pictures were cut out and pasted on letters to Santa. Naturally, there was a box for mailing them. (Text and photos by John Howell)
