The Ladies of Apponaug group is holding their 10th Annual gathering on Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. at Chelo’s Post Road Banquet Hall, 2225 Post Road in Warwick.

The Ladies of Apponaug is a 10-year-old organization that was originally made up of women who grew up in and around Apponaug and surrounding areas of Warwick.

Carol Gosselin Ponte, Dottie Carlow DeMartino, Betty Carlow Caianiello, Barbara Carlow Tyler, Pat Caianiello Audette and Karen Carlow Leite, were the founders of the group.

Since Apponaug was the center of Warwick, and still is to some extent with City Hall, the Station One Fire and Police complex, Kent Hospital, the churches that so many still attend, and with so many persons asking to join our organization, we have opted to open our doors to all of Warwick.

Historic Apponaug was the core of Warwick for so many years, before the malls and surrounding small shopping plazas were established. Apponaug boasts the historic Warwick City Hall in the midst of town, with multi-denominational churches along Post Road, the main Fire and Police Administration Buildings, Kent Hospital and, at one time, a train station at Williams Corner.

Apponaug was also home to the many Little Leagues around the city, as well as Warwick’s Lockwood High School in the early days, until the new Warwick Veteran’s Memorial High School was built to accommodate all students from Warwick. The city’s high schools were ultimately changed into middle schools, and the students from all these other local villages of Warwick converged to Warwick Veteran’s Memorial after their middle school days.

Now, with this constant changing world, new technology, and population growth, Warwick Veteran’s Memorial High School has closed its doors as a high school and revamped the existing structure to an all-inclusive middle school, thus bringing Warwick’s outlying area families together again.

Apponaug continues to be a source of history and growth, with its marinas, restaurants, small shops and social stamina, along

with the newly, redesigned Four Corners construction.

We continue to search, with the help of local media, and word of mouth, to locate persons who still live in the Apponaug/Warwick areas, are offspring of those who lived or worked in Apponaug, those who have moved to other cities within the state, and also who may have moved elsewhere in the United States and abroad. This year we anticipate more of an attendance from all over New England, and beyond.

Our members are multi-aged, with members aging from in their 20s to 90s.

The luncheon cost is $35, with ALL proceeds being donated to a different local charity each year. All donations and tickets must be pre-purchased by August 31.
