Lady Knights blow out Bunker Hill CC

The CCRI Lady Knights’ basketball team traveled through the snowstorm to Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown, Mass., Tuesday evening for a Region XXI non-league game.  The Lady Knights defeated the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill 91-58.  With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 16-7 overall and 5-1 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights had only five players for the evening but made the most of it as they took an 11-point lead into halftime with the score 42-31.  In the second half CCRI cranked up the defense another notch to run away from the Bulldogs and outscore them by 22.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Allexia Barros (New Bedford, Mass.) who almost charted a triple-double, scoring a game-high 29 points with four three-pointers, a career-high 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Barros was helped by Amber Edwards (Boston, Mass.), who tied a career-high with 26 points and five rebounds, while Jess Patalano (Exeter) scored a career-high with 18 points. Rounding out the CCRI attack was Jess Winegar (Cranston), who scored 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the three-point arc and Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.) added six points, four assist, four steals, and three rebounds.

Barros now has 949 career points, just seven points from Amanda Ward (’05), who is No. 2 on the CCRI all-time list with 956 for her career.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be today when they travel to Franklin, Mass., to play region rival Dean College at 8 p.m.

Knights pull off upset of D-I ASA

The Division II Knights hosted the Division I Avengers of ASA College (15-6) for the Knights’ final home game of the season on Saturday.  The Knights pulled off the upset victory just before the storm in the Northeast in a 75-73 thriller at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse in Warwick.

Saturday was also 2014 CCRI Sophomore Day as they honored their six sophomores playing their final home game at the Cullen Fieldhouse: Kevin Marmolejos (Queens, N.Y.), Elijah Okagbare (Atlanta, Ga.), co-captain Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, Conn.), co-captain Rudy Brito (Pawtucket), co-captain Anthony Henry (Danbury, Conn.), and co-captain Pat Marchand (Cranston)

The Avengers got out to a nine-point lead at the midway point of the first half before the Knights began closing the gap. Behind the three point shooting of Malieke Young (Providence), who was six-of-10 on the day from beyond the three-point arc, and Marmolejos, who was three-of-eight from long range, CCRI closed the halftime deficit to 37-35.

In the second half, CCRI used multiple zone and man-to-man defenses that seemed to keep ASA off-balance. The Knights took their first lead of the game 40-37 on a three-pointer from Young just a minute into the second half.  Neither team had more than a four-point advantage in the last 15 minutes of the game. ASA was up 69-67 with 4:30 left before CCRI went ahead on a free throw by Jernigan with 1:00 left in the game. ASA’s Rutgers-bound guard Bishop Daniels put the Avengers back up 73-72 with 13 seconds left in the game on a drive to the basket. CCRI came down and worked the ball into Marchand, who missed two shot attempts but continued to battle under the boards. After missing his second, he got the offensive rebound and put-back while being fouled with just 4.8 seconds remaining. He calmly made his free throw and the Knights held on for the 75-73 upset victory.

Marchand finished with 18 points while Young also scored 18. Jernigan had 11 points and eight assists and Marmolejos added 14 points.

With the win, CCRI finishes with a 3-2 record against Division I opponents this year. The Knights’ next game will be versus their Region XXI rival Dean College on Thursday night at 6 p.m. That game will determine the No. 1 seed and the host for the upcoming Region XXI Championship.
