Lady Knights easily handle Northern Essex

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Knights of Northern Essex Community College from Haverhill, MA on Saturday to Winslow Park for a doubleheader. The Lady Knights swept the doubleheader winning 37-0 and 31-1. With the two victories CCRI improves to 3-7 on the season and 2-0 in Region XXI play.

Game 1: CCRI- 37 Northern Essex CC- 0

In the circle for the Lady Knights in the first game was sophomore Tri-Captain Kailee Morgan (Charlestown, RI) who pitched superbly allowing no runs on just two hits with five strikeouts over four strong innings to pick up her first victory of the year. Morgan also helped her own cause at the plate with four hits including a triple with four RBIs and five runs scored.

Freshman Sam Muller (North Stonington, CT) relieved Morgan in the fifth inning allowing a hit and a walk but struck out three batters to complete the first shutout of the season for the Lady Knights.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Stevie-Rae Travers-Wood (Little Compton, RI) had three hits, two walks, six RBIs and five runs scored. Freshman Michelle Spremulli (Warwick, RI) had three hits including a double and her first collegiate Grand Slam and second home run of the season with six RBIs and four runs scored. Sophomore Tri-Captain Miranda Sasso (Smithfield, RI) also swatted her first career Grand Slam while adding two walks and three runs scored. Also helping CCRI was Kelsie Fitta (West Warwick, RI) who added four hits with four RBIs and three runs scored, Dalynn Jacobs (Riverside, RI) who added four hits including a triple with an RBI and six runs scored and Maddie McDonald (East Providence, RI) added three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. In all CCRI had 26 hits, nine extra base hits including two Grand slams in their first Region XXI victory. The 37 runs in a game is a program record that breaks the previous record of 34 runs scored vs Quinsigamond CC in 2011.

Game 2: CCRI- 31 Northern Essex CC- 1

In the circle for the Lady Knights in game two versus Northern Essex was freshman Sam Muller who continued the dominant pitching on the day for CCRI throwing four strong innings allowing just one earned run on three hits with a walk while striking out six Northern Essex batters to earn her first victory of the year. Muller helped her own cause at the plate with three hits including a double and a triple with five RBIs and four runs scored. Muller was relieved by freshman Hannah Caliri (Pawtucket, RI) who threw one inning giving up one hit and striking out two Northern Essex batters.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Hannah Caliri led the way with three hits including a double and a triple with five RBIs and two runs scored. Dalynn Jacobs stayed hot adding three hits, an RBI and three run scored and Tri-Captain Stevie-Rae Travers-Wood had two hits, three RBIs and five runs scored. Rounding out the CCRI attack was freshman Vanessa Santiago (Waterbury, CT) had two hits an RBI and two runs scored, Maddie McDonald had two hits, two RBIs and four runs scored and Kelsie Fitta (West Warwick, RI) also had two hits, two RBIs and four runs scored.

The next games for the Lady Knights will be Wednesday April 4th when they will hosts the very formidable Pioneers of Sacred Heart University Club team (14-3) to Winslow Park for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
