Lillian Longo


Lillian Longo, age 99, of Cranston, a retired Warwick teacher, passed away on May 13, 2012.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Paul and Sofia (Salzillo) Longo, she was a Cranston resident for over 60 years. She summered in Warwick from 1917 to 1972. Miss Longo was a teacher in the Warwick Schools for 38 years, and retired in 1972 after serving as chairperson of the mathematics department at Gorton Junior High School for 17 years. At her retirement, an award known as the “Lillian Longo Award for Excellence in Mathematics” was established for presentation each year to an outstanding student in the eighth grade. For twenty consecutive years after her retirement, Miss Longo personally presented the award to the deserving student. Miss Longo graduated from Rhode Island College of Education, where she received her Bachelor of Education degree and her Masters degree in Education with a concentration in Mathematics. Remaining active in her retirement, Miss Longo was a member of the Rhode Island College Alumni Association, the Kent County Retired Teachers Association, the Rhode Island Teachers of Mathematics Association, and the National Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by one sister, Pauline L. Denning of Warwick; two nieces, Paula Paiva and Teresa Sevilla; two nephews, William Longo, M.D. and Paul Denning, M.D.; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. She was the sister of the late Antoinetta M. Longo, John C. Longo, and Americo D. Longo, M.D.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, May 18 at 9:00 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Paul Church, One St. Paul Place, Cranston. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours are Thursday from 4-7 p.m.
