Locking it up

It wasn’t a perfect weekend for the Bishop Hendricken hockey team, but it was good enough to get the job done.

The Hawks lost 6-5 to Mount St. Charles on Friday, but rebounded in their regular season-finale on Saturday to beat La Salle 4-1. With the win, Hendricken clinched the No. 1 seed in the state playoffs, which are set to open this Friday.

Hendricken finished the regular season at 14-3-1, and its 24.2 power points were two more than second-place Mount’s total.

In the victory over the Rams, the Hawks got goals from Andrew Fera and Matt Creamer in the first period and, after La Salle scored in the second, Ed Markowski gave Hendricken a 3-1 lead.

Creamer added the exclamation point with his second goal of the game in the third period.

In net, Billy Palmer saved 18 of the 19 shots he faced, while Hendricken put 30 shots on La Salle goaltender Alexander Handanyan.

Now, Hendricken will try to get back to the finals for the second straight season and win its first state championship since the 2006-07 season.

Its first-round opponent will be Burrillville, which came in fourth place with 17 power points. The best-of-three series is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, with a game Monday if necessary.

Mount and La Salle will play each other in the other semifinal.
