The Toll Gate football team improved its record to 3-2 in Division III with a convincing, 33-6 victory over Coventry on Saturday afternoon.

The Oakers (0-5) produced a strong first quarter, as the Titans held just a one-point lead, 7-6, after 12 minutes of play. After that, though, it was all Toll Gate, with the home team outscoring Coventry, 26-0, over the final three quarters.

Titans’ sophomore running back Kenny Morel was tough to contain out of the backfield, rushing 12 times for 111 yards and three touchdowns. Michael Negri also had an impressive game with a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown on a pass from senior quarterback Anthony Vann.

Toll Gate’s defensive effort was sparked by Matt Martinez, A.J. Ucci and Cory Vickers, who all had one interception apiece, while Qyon Pichardo recorded a fumble recovery.

The Titans will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Hope (3-2).

McConnell sends Pats past Chargers in OT

Samantha McConnell scored off an assist from Karly Evans in the waning minutes of overtime to help Pilgrim narrowly get past Chariho, 2-1, in Division II field hockey action on Thursday.

Evans set up the lone goal in the first half, as well, with Trinity Reilly scoring out front to give Pilgrim a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

But, Chariho would battle back with a goal from Mollie Dyer in the second half to force overtime.

There, McConnell would secure the win for her team with the game-winning goal with just over a minute remaining in the extra period.

Pilgrim was set to host rival Toll Gate on Monday, but results were unavailable at press time.

Titans lock up playoff spot with win

The Toll Gate field hockey team earned a spot in the upcoming Division II playoff tournament with a 2-0 shutout of Cranston East on Thursday.

Cathryn DeWolf netted the eventual game-winning goal in the first half, and Mya Linchitz gave the Titans some breathing room with a second-half tally to make it 2-0. Quinn Freeman and Nicole Procaccini added as assist each in the win, and senior goalkeeper Mary Greenwell was forced to make just two stops to earn the shutout.

Toll Gate improved to 6-6-2 in Division II with the victory.

Pats power past Purple

The Pilgrim girls’ tennis team concluded its regular season with a 9-8 record after powering past Classical, 5-2, on Thursday in the season finale.

Jenna Gustafson, Vanessa Escamilla and Samantha Sheehan all earned singles victories, but they didn’t come easy, with all three players being forced to a third set before emerging victorious.

Pilgrim then added a pair of doubles victories, as well. The team of Brooke Pariseau and Ella Centracchio won in straight sets at No. 2 doubles, as did the pairing of Alexis Cabral and Lauren Simpson at No. 3 doubles.

Big second half helps Pats down Novans

Pilgrim broke a scoreless tie at halftime with five goals in the second half to cruise past Woonsocket, 5-0, in a Division III boys’ soccer matchup on Friday.

Senior forward Evan O’Connor paced Pilgrim’s attack with a hat trick, and sophomore Danny Peixinho also added a pair of goals. Niall Blackadar helped to get the offense going with three assists, and Max Caracuzzo was once again solid in net to pick up another shutout.

Pilgrim is now 9-1-4 and will return to the field when it hosts Johnston (6-5-3) today at 3:30 p.m.
