Where can you hear three distinct styles of Louisiana Cajun, Creole and Zydeco Music played by two 2013 Grammy Nominees?

Entering its third decade of bringing American roots music to Rhode Island, the 2013 Annual Cajun & Zydeco Mardi Gras Ball takes place on February 23 at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet in Cranston. This much-loved event is a true sound sampler of outstanding Louisiana Cajun, Creole and “West Coast Style” Zydeco music. Go for a great introduction to American Roots music, or just to experience Louisiana culture at its best.

Headlining the 21st Annual Ball is 2013 Grammy Nominee Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys. Steve is a perennial favorites who brings a “rouse the house” New Cajun sound to the hall of Rhodes. Also featured is 2013 Grammy nominee Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic. Michael Tisserand, author of The Kingdom of Zydeco, says Andre “is a standard bearer for the new generation. Thierry is among the best of both the West Coast and the Gulf Coast, and he combines youthful vigor with a mature appreciation for his inherited tradition.” Jeffery Broussard & The Creole Cowboys rounds out the lineup with great, pack-the-floor renditions of Creole classics as well as their own brand of contemporary Zydeco. Jeffrey Broussard is known as one of the most influential accordionists and vocalists in modern Zydeco music, and is clearly one of the genre’s most dynamic performers.

A perennial favorite, the 2013 ball promises to be a fun and ‘big-easy’-going night of dancing, great costumes, prizes and Cajun-inspired food by Russell Morin Caterers. Costumes are optional with prizes in several categories with a Grand Prize of $250 to the best overall costume.
