Mary S. Thorp
Mary S. Thorp, age 83, died August 30 from natural causes at her residence in Greenville, Rhode Island. She was the wife of the late Geoffrey W. Thorp, Sr.
Mary was born on September 21, 1929 in Seekonk, Massachusetts, the youngest daughter of Frederick and Ina Stansfield. Mary and Geoffrey had a double wedding with Mary’s sister, Elizabeth and Everett Tefft (both deceased) on February 18, 1950 at the First Unitarian Church in Providence where they attended church services. Mary and Geoffrey began their married life in Centredale, Rhode Island and then moved to North Scituate, where they built their second and primary home and raised their family. They enjoyed summers at their ‘camp’ on Narrow River in Narragansett. Mary obtained her degree from the University of Rhode Island and had a long career in banking starting at Industrial National Bank, now known as Bank of America. After retiring from banking she had a second career in real estate. She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, art and exotic trips to places like the mountains in Peru or desserts in Mexico. She loved dogs and especially cared for the well being of elephants.
Mary and Geoffrey had four children; Janice of Rangeley, Maine, the late Geoffrey Jr. of Foster, Timothy of Cumberland, and Cary of Mendon, Vermont. She also had five grandchildren, Jesse and Harrison Thorp, Nathaniel Oz, Robert and Torrin Thorp; and two great-grandchildren, Zoey and Wyatt Thorp.
There will be a memorial service for Mary and her sister Elizabeth Stansfield Tefft who passed on the same day, at the First Unitarian Church at 1 Benevolent Street, Providence, RI, phone 401-421-7970, on September 22, 2012 at 2 p.m. with a reception from 3-5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers Mary would have appreciated a donation to The Elephant Sanctuary, PO Box 393, Hohenwald, TN 38462.
