Mayor to talk about reopening of Armenian Church

Mayor Scott Avedisian will take the pulpit this Sunday at Trinity Church in Pawtuxet at the 8 and 10 a.m. services. He will speak of his trip and experiences during his visit in October to St. Giragos Armenian Apostolic Church in Diyardakir, Turkey.

In celebration of the restoration and reopening of the church, seen as one of the largest Armenian churches in the Middle East with seven altars, Diyarbakir's Mayor Osman Baydemir contacted elected officials of Armenian descent across the globe. Avedisian accepted the invitation and attended at his own expense. The church was closed during the Armenian Genocide in 1915-16 and returned to the Armenian community in 1960.
